END OF PROJECT EVALUATION: LOITOKITOK MATERNAL, NEWBORN AND CHILD HEALTH PROJECT

The project “Loitokitok Maternal and child health” was located in Loitokitok region, Kajiado County, South west of Kenya and aimed at contributing towards a reduction in maternal, newborn and child morbidity and mortality .The project addressed impediments inhibiting access to good health that revolve around, cultural practices, distance to health facilities and weak health system. It was implemented through a local implementing partner known as Shokut Naretoi Community Development Project. The project targeted residents of 2 wards of Kuku and Rombo in Loitokitok-Sub County, Kajiado County.
The evaluation aimed at assessing the progress of the Loitokitok maternal, newborn and child health project in terms of its relevance, effectiveness, sustainability and impact in reduction in maternal, newborn and child morbidity and mortality. This was a cross-sectional survey that applied both quantitative and qualitative approaches. A total of 440 households of women who had a live birth in the last two years participated in the study. Qualitative data was collected through key informant interviews, focus group discussions and document review. Quantitative data was collected using KoBocollect data collection software and later exported to SPSS version 22 for analysis.
Scope of Work
Realtime was responsible for providing overall leadership in every stage of the evaluation process; Providing technical input in design of the evaluation; ensuring standard operating procedures are adhered to throughout the study period, Leading in quantitative and qualitative data analysis and Report writing.
Activities included:
Designing evaluation methodology
Development of data collection tools
Raining of Research assistants in data collection and ethical considerations
Coordinating data collection exercise in the field using Kobo collect application software
Conducting data analysis
Developing end of project evaluation report
Insights
Based on the study findings, this project made a significant contribution towards change of the community perceptions on some of the deep rooted cultural beliefs that have a negative impact on MNCH/FP/RH services in the community. The project contributed to changes in perceptions on early marriages and female genital mutilation (FGM), home deliveries and family planning, contributing to the improved health outcomes.
