SITUATION ANALYSIS ON PREVENTION AND MANAGEMENT OF EMERGING FORMS OF VIOLENCE IN LEARNING INSTITUTIONS IN KENYA

The Ministry of Education (MoE) in collaboration with Association for Development of Education in Africa (ADEA) established the Inter-Country Quality Node (ICQN) on Peace Education under ADEA in 2009 with the aim of bringing together African countries and strategic partners to promote dialogue and collective learning and to create space for collaborative action on peace education. Through the ICQN on peace education, the ministry implemented an intervention aimed at countering violent extremism in learning institutions. The programme targeted five African countries namely; Liberia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, Cote d’ Ivoire and Kenya. In Kenya, the programme was implemented in 7 counties namely Bungoma, Garissa, Isiolo, Kisumu, Kwale, Muranga and Nairobi.
Scope of Work
Conduct systematic Literature Review on radicalization and violent extremism (Kenya and globally)
Design the assessment
Develop data collection tools
Conduct data collection in various parts of the country through Focus group discussions and Key Informant Interviews with Various education stakeholders
Conduct Data analysis
Develop a detailed Report
Dissemination of the findings during the validation Workshop
Results
Designed the nationwide assessment that led to documentation of emerging forms of violence in schools
Developed a detailed report on ongoing interventions, gap and challenges facing schools in management if radicalization and extreme violence.
